One of Turkish Fives Ferit Alnar Commemorated in Vienna

Vienna Yunus Emre Enstitüsü organized Ferit Alnar Memorial Events on November 23-24 to commemorate one of the Turkish Fives, Hasan Ferit Alnar.

Following the conference on November 23rd held in Vienna Yunus Emre Enstitüsü Conference Hall presented by Prof. Dr. Ruhi Ayangil, a documentary film was screened.

Ferit Alnar Memorial Concert was held at the Vienna Grand Hotel on November 24th. Turkish Ambassador to Vienna Ferden Çarıkçı and Yunus Emre Institute President Prof. Dr. Şeref Ateş attended the event accompanied by Ferit Alnar's student Prof. Dr. Ruhi Ayangil and Presidential Symphony Orchestra Chamber Orchestra.

Vienna Yunus Emre Institute Director Ayşe Yorulmaz started her speech by greeting the audience and briefly spoke on the life of Ferit Anlar commemorated in the event, thanking everyone who contributed to the program.

Institute President Prof. Dr. Ateş marked in his speech that it was not coincidence and that they specifically selected November 24th Teachers' Day for this event, congratulating the Teachers' Day of Ferit Alnar and all teachers. Ateş also underlined that artist Ferit Alnar was trained by prominent musicians in Vienna and functioned as an important cultural bridge between the two countries.

In the first part of the concert, songs from H. Ferit Alnar's “10 Saz Semâîsi” were performed by qanun virtuoso Ruhi Ayangil and oud virtuoso Serhan Aytan.

In the last part of the event, following eight piano compositions Ferit Alnar dedicated to his teacher Sadettin Arel, Ferit Alnar's qanun concerto was performed by soloist Ruhi Ayangil, with Hasan Niyazi Tura and Tangör Ertaş on violin, Murat Cangal on viola, Oğuzhan Kavruk on cello and Tayfun Tümer on double bass. The concert widely acclaimed by the audience, ended after a souvenir photo shoot.

A number of art lovers attended the concert which was an example of the interaction between cultures and artistic traditions of Turkey and Austria. In addition to the local press, the concert organized by contributions of Turkish Airlines (THY) and Denizbank, was attended by the Daily Sabah newspaper Editor-in-Chief Serdar Karagöz, Yenişafak Journalist and ITU faculty member Assoc. Dr. Yalçın Çetinkaya.

Hasan Ferit Alnar

Hasan Ferit Alnar, one of the Turkish Fives in classical Turkish music, is a qanun virtuoso and contemporary Turkish music composer. He is a master of music who synthesized classical Turkish music with Western music and composed a concerto for an oriental instrument for the first time. Alnar, who graduated from the Vienna State Music Academy Department of Composition, composed significant works both in classical Turkish and Western music.
