Two Great Losses of Turcology

Prof. Dr. Talât Tekin (1927 - 2015) and Prof. Dr. Tevfik Hacıyev (1936-2015) known for their valuable studies in Turcology,  passed away.

Saddened by their losses, we wish their grieving families patience. May they rest in peace.

Talât Tekin had been living in Bodrum with his wife for almost ten years, and his funeral ceremony took place on 29th November Sunday. Following the afternoon  prayer performed in Gündoğan Mosque, he has been taken to Gündoğan Cemetery where he will eternally rest.

The funeral ceremony of Tevfik Hacıyev (Tofik Hacıyev) Director of Nesimî Language Institute with studies he held under the roof of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Following the afternoon prayer, he was buried in “Fahri Hiyaban-2” cemetery in Baqu, where he embarked on his eternal journey.  

 

On Tevfik Hacıyev

Tofik İsmayıloğlu Hacıyev was born on 1 May 1936 in Soltanlı Village in Jabrayil District. Completed his primary and secondary education in Jabrayil, he arrived in Baqu in 1953. Hacıyev who studied in Azerbaijan State University Department of Philology, completed his degree in 1958 with honors. He completed his graduate degree in 1962 with a thesis on “Jabrayil Dialect of Azerbaijani Language” with guidance from a well-known linguist of the period M.Ş. Şireliyev. In January 1968, he started teaching in Azerbaijan State University. He continued his studies in this university he was an alumni of. He received “doctor” title in 1969 with his thesis on “Azerbaijani Literary Language in Early 20th Century” and received the professor title in 1971. Hacıyev penned 34 books and released numerous scientific articles. 

 

On Talât Tekin

Tekin was born on 16 July 1927 in Tavşancıl village of Gebze. He completed Tavşancıl Elementary School, Üsküdar Paşakapısı Middle School, and Haydarpaşa High School (1945). He graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language and Literature in 1951. He worked as a teacher in İzmir, Trabzon and Bitlis cities. In 1957, he quit his teaching position and started to work as a grammarian in Turkish Language Society. He went to USA in 1961 and received “doctor” title in 1965 with his thesis on “Orkhon Inscriptions”. He taught Turkish Language and Literature in universities of California and Indiana (1961-1972). He returned to Turkey in 1972 and received “professor” title in 1976 from Hacettepe University. Following his retirement in 1994, he became the Head of Department of Turkish Language and Literature in a foundation university in Istanbul. He penned numerous books and articles on various branches of Turcology and Altaic languages theory.
